Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. a police officer. The couple split after Latifah, then ten years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and received her education at Newark New Jersey. She went to in the Baptist church. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and gentle in Arabic was given to her her cousin at the age of she was just eight years old. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was on the high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah first began to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the founding members of Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective made up of DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. It was signed by Latifah and dropped her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
